Here s a typical scenario: You are deciding to start a home business and suddenly everyone you know has his nose in your business, literally. What do you tell them? And how do you answer your own questions? What should you expect from the company in terms of stability, longevity, vitality, trust, income, and so forth?
First the bad news: there are no guarantees. Then the good news: there is plenty of information from which to draw your own conclusions. The internet is huge, and any good company will offer free marketing tools and training.

But back to the WHY of that business plan. You re going to be starting small, slow and boy! is there a lot to learn. What s the point of actually sitting down and writing a business plan? You re not Bill Gates, this isn t Microsoft, just you in your home office a few hours a week, slowly building an online business presence, not really understanding what the heck you ll be doing.

Relax and breathe. Unlike Mt. Rushmore, your plan won t be designed to withstand the weathering of the ages. You can expect it will change and bend with the flow of your real experiences, which will be totally yours, not identical to anyone else s.

What writing your plan will do is cause you to pause, think, dream, study and focus. The written document, whether it is one page or twelve, will give your business a framework to work within. The internet is vast and seemingly endless. It is easy to lose focus and drift away on a different whim or idea every day. Understanding where you are today, what tools you have to work with, what your goals are, and how you can best achieve them and measure your success, will help you stay on target and not waste what few hours you may be investing in your business at start-up.

Whenever you feel lost or confused, you can return to what you have written. When you analyze your situation and decide to make a change, rewrite that part of the plan. Understand that it s a living document, intended to grow with you and your business. Your business plan is your friend.

Getting Started with the Business Plan

First you need to study the company and its management. You need to read and learn about the products, the compensation plan and the network structure. See you next month. Just kidding.

Plan on doing SOME reading each and every work day for the next few months, if not indefinitely. Keep up with the company forum entries every day; read something in the training reports every day. Your education will continue. Plan for it.

When you are ready, open up a Notepad window and answer these questions:

What service/products does your business provide and what needs does it fill?

Who are the potential customers for your product or service and why will they purchase it from you?

How will you reach your potential customers?

Where will you get the financial resources to start your business?

Ok. Maybe your company offers many products and services. What do you want to focus on? I suggest that, at first, you focus on one or two products and/or the affiliate opportunity. In other words, keep is simple. Once you get the hang of what you re doing, you will KNOW when it s time to expand. Do only what you are comfortable with, every step of the way. This is YOUR business, it s your right and privilege to decide on your approach.

Internet marketing hinges on building trust. How will you do this?

Reaching customers means marketing. Your decision, once again. And again, the options should be in your company’s training materials.

So we re talking developing a reading/study schedule. Here s a possible list, once you ve read enough to make your own decisions to answer the above questions, start writing. Your writing can be lists of words and phrases, free-form brainstorming, outlines, mind maps, whatever works for you. Just write it down, and don t forget to save often. If your home office is inhabited by cats or small children, they have the tendency to press on random keyboard keys. Documents do occasionally just disappear. Saving avoids total disaster.

1. Study the products.
2. Read the training materials.
3. Read about commissions, bonuses, etc.
4. Study the marketing aids and strategies
5. Find out what free tools are available.
6. Visit the forums on a regular basis. Read everything about getting started.
7. Ask questions.

Your final written business plan will have at least four parts:

Introduction/background: history of the company and its founder, internet marketing trends, why THIS company and why NOW, and so on.

Goals: I suggest you think of what you would like to be earning in two years, but mainly focus on goals for your first year. Realistic goals can be projected based on info on the company website, in newsletters, searches on the forums, and focused questions to other affiliates.

Marketing plan: based on your answers to the first 3 questions above and your study of marketing aids and tools.

Action plans: the specifics of what you will do on a monthly, weekly, and/or daily basis for the next year.

I can t tell you what your answers should be, because you have to decide how much money you have to invest. Only you can decide how many hours per day, week or month you can invest in your business. What products you feel most comfortable marketing, and who you decide to target as your customer base, are all decisions only you can make. If you get stuck and don t understand a question, don t know where to find information, or don t know how to ASK a question, contact your sponsor or someone in your upline. If they can’t help you, they should be able to send you to someonewho can.

You should NEVER feel alone. Work should be FUN!

Internet business only $59.95. It seems too good to be true! Can
you actually get a Web site, hosting, search engine placement and
products to sell for under $60? Can you actually begin to turn a

Hmmm what’s the old saying? “If it sounds too good to be true “

When these types of infomercials start, the pitch is usually
something along the lines of, “you can own your own Internet
business for only $59.95 and become rich by only working 20
minutes a day.” Granted, they do show testimonials from people
who supposedly have made millions with this type of business.
And, they do make a persuasive argument that this type of success
is possible because the Internet is a worldwide medium. Can it be
done? Yes. However, the real question is, “can it be done by your
average person”?

The answer to that question is no. How do I know it can’t be done?
I’ve tried it. Before I recommend any new products or services to
my clients I buy them and try them to be sure they are safe and
legitimate. I investigate the companies and their products and
services.

Let me share with you what I’ve found about these types of
Internet Businesses In A Box.

Watch Out For the Small Print

Small print seems to play a major role in the advertising campaigns
of these firms. For instance, satisfied customers appear showing
you the checks they’ve received from their business. Your natural
response is to focus on the rich business owner. Instead, read the
small print at the bottom of the screen. “These experiences are
unique and your results may vary. Dollar amounts quoted are gross
sales.” Some even say, “Business owners are fictitious characters
portrayed by actors”. It’s a perception angle. You usually do not
notice the small print because the company has directed your
attention toward the big checks. They have you dreaming of all the
money you will make when you use their product.

Another major surprise that comes from not reading the fine print is
sprung on you once the package arrives. For $59.95 you receive the
“how to information” - nothing is done for you you must do it all
yourself. Since most of the purchasers of this type of product are
“newbies”, the information does little good. When Internet business
people are just starting out, they normally don’t know a Web host from
a Web site.

The first thing you are instructed to do is build your website. Although
the company tells you that the site is easy to build and you need no
programming or HTML experience, there is no doubt that the site will
appear amateurish. This is by no means a slight to Internet newbies.
It is simply a factual statement. I know of no one that could design
a professional-looking Web site on their first attempt.

Add On’s

Once the Web site is completed, you will need a Web host in order for
it to be viewed on the ‘Net. Another surprise comes when you
discover the monthly hosting fees are not included in your $59.95.
Hosting fees can run between $10.00 - $75.00 per month depending
on which features you require and the amount of space needed.

What Will You Sell?

During the infomercial the company mentioned that you would have
thousands of products to choose from. However, what I found was
that there were only 50 or 60. When I questioned this, I was told
they either fired their supplier or the contract with the supplier
expired and new negotiations were underway. As for the quality of
the items it was sorely lacking. Rather cheep trinkets that had no
real value.

How Will Your Customers Pay?

In order for customers to pay online, you will need a shopping cart
system. However, I’m afraid I found that this application was
another add on. It was not included in the $59.95 price.

In addition to the shopping cart, you’ll also need a merchant account
to receive credit card payments. Most merchant accounts require a
2 year contract. However, to receive a merchant account from this
company, a 5 year contract was required. I found the set up fees
very high and the monthly fees just as disturbing. Not to mention,
with a new Internet business, I can’t imagine being tied into a 5 year
agreement. If the company fails, you would still be liable to pay the
monthly fees for the remaining time on the contract.

Bringing Traffic To Your Site

During the infomercial, you are told that the company will submit your
new Web site to the top 1,000 search engines with automated
software. However, what most people don’t understand is that 90%
of your search engine traffic will come from the top 20 engines. In
addition, most of the major engines require manual submissions, not
automated. In order to get your site positioned properly, you’ll either
need to buy additional software, pay a search engine professional to
do the task or learn to handle it yourself. Needless-to-say, that costs
even more money.

I am not going to add up all the individual cost of my investigation but
I will give you the total cost that was on the contract they wanted me
to sign. Not counting the $59.95 I had already paid for my Internet
business in a box, they asked for another $2695.00.

This article is not meant to discourage you from starting your own
Internet business. My business is to educate people about the sharks
that will try to take your money.

Can you start your own Internet business, make money, lie out by the
pool sipping Margaritas and only work 20 minutes a day? You bet! And
it can be done for a lot less than $2,695.00. Will it happen the first
week you’re in business? No. Before you jump into an online business, I
urge you to educate yourself, learn how the Internet works, decide
what you can or are willing to do yourself and what you will have to pay
someone else to do. Calculate the entire cost. You will not get rich over
night. It will take time to build your business and automate it. Then, with
a little luck and a lot of hard work in the beginning, you can lie out by
the pool sipping Margaritas.

If you are planning on doing business online with one of the many work from home based businesses available on the internet, then you are going to want to make sure your computer is up to the task.

Although it is possible to get by with a Pentium 1, at today s prices there is no reason to do so. Pentium 4 computers and AMD equivalent computers have dropped in price enormously.

I have to admit, I am still using an Intel Celeron 766 Mh computer but I upgraded the ram to 384 Mb and the hard drive to 80 Gb. Also a high speed internet connection is a must. I am connected to the internet from 8:00 Am to 2:00 Am (18 Hours) continuously every day. This means my security including firewall must be set up properly and working. But that s another article for another time.

Why do you need a powerful computer for your work from home internet business? Well before I upgraded from my Pentium MMX 233 Mh computer I was spending more time re booting from freeze ups and cleaning my hard drive than I was actually working at my internet work from home based business. Yes I started out over 5 years ago using a Pentium MMX 233 with only 160 Mb of RAM and a 3 Gb hard drive, proving that it is possible to build a work from home internet business on an old slow computer. But why would you. I upgraded to a used Celeron 766 Mh computer with 256 Mb of RAM for $200 Canadian. And here in Canada you can buy a Pentium 4 or AMD equivalent for just $400-$500.

I recommend the following main features when looking for your work from home internet business computer.
1. Pentium 4 or AMD Equivalent.
2. 256 Mb of RAM minimum. 512 Mb is better.
3. 80 Gb hard drive or better
4. Ethernet for high speed internet connection.
Your video card is less important unless you plan to play games on your work from home business computer. Cheaper computers come with onboard video which is just fine for business purposes.

Try to get at least a 17 inch monitor. Get an LCD monitor if you can afford it. It will save you all kinds of desk space giving you more room to work.

These are my recommendations for your work from home internet business computer based on my past experiences with my own work from home internet business. They are just guidelines only. In fact you could spend thousands of dollars more than what I have suggested here. Wouldn t we all love to have an AMD 64 computer with 2 Gb RAM, dual 200 Gb raided hard drives and a 21 inch LCD monitor!

After deciding what kind of internet business you want to do, it’s time to start planning the design and content of your business. Many people make the mistake of skipping this step, choosing instead to immediately start work on their website. However, a website is just a door into your internet business; and a door is pretty useless if there’s nothing beyond it. An internet business, like any other business, requires proper planning and design if it’s going to succeed.

a) Domain Name

A big part of your internet business is your domain name. A domain name is like the company name, or brand, of your business. This is the first thing a person will notice, whether they are typing your domain name into their browser, or clicking a link in the search engines.

It is advisable to choose a domain name that is short and memorable. A key part of branding is to make your name striking enough so that people will remember it long after they’ve visited your website. However, do make sure that the domain name is at least somehow related to the nature of your business.

b) Website Design

The next step will be to plan the design and the look and feel of your website. You will need to decide how you want your website to look like, and where to put your menu, header, footer, ads and your main text. When designing your menu and website navigation, do make it simple and intuitive. A simple navigation system will let people browse through your site without getting lost. Next, you will need to determine how big your website will be. Online stores will be huge by default, since they will need at least one page per product being offered. In any case, think about what sections you want to have on your website, and how many pages per section. Try to structure the site so that visitors will not get lost or intimidated by it.

For websites larger than 10 pages, it is useful to have breadcrumbs, like the one near the top of this page (eg. HOME > SECTION > PAGE). This tells the visitor exactly where they are, and how to get back to where they were previously.

Also useful are search bars and sitemaps. Search bars, like the one on the top left of this page, allow users to quickly search for whatever they are looking for. You can get a free search bar at Digital Point. A sitemap is also important for users as well as search engine robots to find the pages on your site. A good sitemap to follow is Apple’s Sitemap. It is straightforward and contains all the information you require.

d) Content

When a typical user surfs the internet, they are generally looking for information. So to make your site useful and attract visitors, you will need to fill it with good content and information.

If you are not sure what type of content to fill your website with, explore your competitors’ websites, and try to get a feel of what type content works and what doesn’t.
